Batam: behind the big malls and superblocks

Illegal quarters in Batam island is an integral part of this island’s life. Also known as ruli – rumah liar (illegal house), these quarters can be seen almost everywhere, even beside major roadways. In a way, these quarters show the great work opportunities Batam has for immigrants. People in these quarters have decent jobs ranging from operators in one of the many industries here to cab drivers. The quarters have developed much such that it is very common to see either a church or a small mosque in each of the community.

This quarters community above is unique in the sense that it grew behind a superblock which has never took off (another typical Batam business style) – Menara Imperium (Imperium Tower). Do you notice the high tension cables above? They were moved a few hundred meters from the original positions so that Menara Imperium can be built. Not too distinct on the foreground are a few edible plants: cassava, corn, and banana. Yes, as with other similar communities, the illegal quarters in Batam are almost self sufficient.

I took three bracketed frames with 2 stops difference. The shutter-speed printed here is the slowest with +2 stops. It was such a bright day that I had no problem in pushing the aperture down to f/22. Tonemapping was done with Photomatix. Color saturation of the three yellow domes of the Imperium complex were increased manually in Aperture to pop up the color.

valentine?

Valentine 2012

First things first: I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. I failed to see the point: why should we wait until the 14th of February every year to express our loves. Moreover why should we express it with chocolates. I would do it with wine, rose sparkling wine, that of Sogrape Mateus Rose. Or cherry. But not chocolates.

Anyway, like it or not it’s Valentine’s Day, and so I choose an image that may suit the day, even though not much. The dancers pictured here were dancing on flexible poles in Marina Bay Sands Singapore. It’s not a good shot, far from it. I arrived late at the scene; in fact they were closing the show. My 70-200mm f/4L was in my bag. My position was off side. And I was also late to realize that ISO 640 was not adequate to freeze their movements. Geez! And I had to use Focal Point to throw the Spectators at the back out of focus.

It’s not a good picture. I do hope it qualify for Valentine’s Day theme though: it has a pinkish color and there is a couple in it (although their faces clearly said that they were not in love!). The only element missing is a heart. But wait, it’s not missing, it’s inside each of your souls.

And if you are looking for inspiration, may I suggest to take a look to Yoli’s 13 Ways To Share Love on Valentine’s Day (#1to31). She put up 13 ways, but for me the most important line she shared is the 14th way: “…make it a habit to share your love with the world more often. It’ll make you and others feel great.”

Have an enchanting day, and do send me some of those chocolates!

shower of light

IonOrchard 01

One evening in Singapore after a heavy rain, in front of one of its latest shopping incarnation, ION Orchard. Boosting 330 retail shops inside, it includes big names such as Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dior, Giorgio Armani and Dolce & Gabbana. That night the rain was a blessing, for it gave the wet floor a glossy surface creating a nice reflection of the different lights.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Hope

DentalHope 006

This is an old picture from 2009, when I joined a community service by Bintan Resorts and the Singapore Dental Association, together with the participation of the Health Office, Police, and (yes!) Army, providing free dental service in Tanjung Uban, north Bintan.

Chinese New Year in a Vihara

Every year on Chinese New Year, thousands flock in the largest Buddhist temple in Batam, Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya, to thank Buddha for the life, to ask for (more) fortune, and… to have free meals! Yes, every year for the past five years, the Vihara has been providing free vegetarian food from early morning until late evening for everybody, regardless of race, religion, or fortune. This year, it was said that 50 chefs and 200 volunteers prepared the meals in its four kitchens, which included 2 tons of rice, 300kg noodles, 20 sacks of potatoes, and 1 ton of green vegetables. All to feed approximately 25 thousand visitors. The scene of the volunteers chopping vegetables reminded me of my enriching time with my Cafe Momento friends in Yogyakarta during a relief effort for Merapi disaster back in 2010.

Dragon at my feet

IMG 007

I guess this picture still fit this weeks’s post: it has the year of the Dragon element. It was taken last year during the opening of Bintan Cultural Festival as one of the giant kites props. And guess what… soon the 2012 Bintan Cultural Festival will be here!

smile!

For almost two weeks I have been going in and out of our Power Plant. While I can tell you no details, it sure was more oily than usual. Another unfortunate fact is that I can not post any detailed pictures.

A letter on my door step. portraits are more than paper.

This post by Jeanine Thurston touched me a lot that I think it is worth reblogging. It reminds us on the importance of memories…, and part of the reason why photography exist. I hope you enjoy the reading as much as I do.

There will be no portrait photos in this post.  This letter wasn’t mailed – it was at my doorstep when I got home a couple months ago.  I read it, I cried, and read it again – probably a hundred times by now.  It wasn’t easy to read – and honestly, as much as it validates what I do for a living – I wasn’t sure I was going to share it either.  If you choose to read through the letter, you will know why I’ve finally chosen to share it.

Jeanine –

Today I am writing for a couple of reasons.  I have some quiet time at the moment and need to get a couple of things off my mind.  I will leave this for my husband to deliver to you when he is ready.

You photographed my wedding, you photographed my first pregnancy and my…
